What students will cover:
Areas of Study – All year 7 students will cover the following in Engage:
Introduction to Engage (All about me):
- Students will learn to share basic information with their peers.
- Identify key information from a text.
- Explore and understand the meaning and importance of key instructions.
Reading (Room 13 and source texts):
- Study a text, to demonstrate an understanding of text and genre.
- Create story openings suited to the needs of the piece.
- Link key English skills to the text and to their writing.
Writing for purpose:
- Students will create pieces of writing for a variety of purposes, (writing to inform, writing to instruct, writing both formal and informal letters, creative writing, biographical writing/factual writing).
- Develop their use of verbs, nouns, personal pronouns, punctuation and spelling.
Speaking and listening:
- Students will create and deliver a speech, supported by a PowerPoint presentation. They will deliver to the class and take part in a QA session, based on their chosen topic.

Key English Skills students will develop:
Reading:
- Look at a variety of short texts including simple texts that inform, describe and narrate
- Explore a full text to develop understanding of genre, how to build a story and a range of key skills.
Writing:
- Students to practice writing for a variety of texts including short simple texts eg: messages and notes
- They will develop their accuracy of simple sentences and their use of the correct punctuation as well as the correct use of capital letters.
- Students will overlearn a list of key words specifically linked to the Entry level 1 Functional skills pathway.
Speaking and listening:

What students will cover:
Areas of Study – All year 8 students will cover the following in Engage:
Reading (Source texts linked to detective’s genre):
- Study a variety of texts, to demonstrate an understanding of text and genre.
- Creative writing skills, developing descriptive writing by creating characters suited to the needs of the story.
- Continue to link key English skills to the text and to their writing as well as over-learning content from year 7.
Writing for purpose:
- Students will create pieces of writing for a variety of purposes, (writing letters, writing emails, creative writing and form filling.
- Continue to develop their use of verbs, nouns, personal pronouns, punctuation and spelling.
- Write using compound sentences using common conjunctions
- Sequence words according to the alphabet.
Speaking and listening:
- Students will create and deliver an argument, supported by a PowerPoint presentation. They will deliver to the class and take part in a class discussion, based on their chosen topic.

- Understanding by being able to extract key information and understand the main points of the text.

Writing:
- Students to practice writing for a variety of texts including short simple texts eg: letters, emails and simple narratives.
- They will develop their accuracy of simple sentences and their use of the correct punctuation as well as the correct use of capital letters.

What students will cover:
Areas of Study – All year 9 students will cover the following in Engage:
Reading (Source texts include a scripted play and a variety of poems):
- Study a variety of different types of text (poetry and scripts), to demonstrate an understanding of text and context.
- Explore, identify, understand and extract the main points and ideas from a variety of texts
- Continue to link key English skills to the text and to their writing as well as over-learning content from year 8.
- Use organisational features to help them locate key information for example, contents, index, menus, tabs ad links
Writing for purpose:
- Students will create pieces of writing for a variety of purposes, (writing narratives, instructions, explanations and reports).
- Continue to develop their use of verbs, nouns, personal pronouns, punctuation, use of regular and irregular plurals and spelling.
